| SUPERALP!5 - The sustainable crossing of the Alps The Permanent Secretariat of the Alpine Convention organises from 4th – 12th July 2011 the fifth edition of SuperAlp!, the sustainable crossing of the Alps.
For the fifth year SuperAlp! crosses the Alps linking different territories, issues and cultures aiming at improving the knowledge of the Alpine Convention,
that recognizes the Alps as a whole and unique territory.
A group of journalists belonging to world’s top publications will cross the Alpine arc for nine days utilising sustainable means of transport and trying out the various links that make up the chain of alternative mobility to private cars. The group will travel from France to Italy across Switzerland and Austria by train, bicycle bus and on foot.
The 2011 edition lets participants discover the conditions of alpine glaciers, one of the most evident indicators of the effects of climate change. It also intends to make this crossing an occasion to communicate the Alpine Convention and its Protocols as tools for the sustainable development of the Alpine region, easily transferable also to other mountain regions of the world. read more ... |
| Trofeo Mezzalama - the white Marathon above 4000 m. "Rope up! Safety first"
The Mezzalama Trophy is approaching that magical moment which will give the go-ahead to the four hundred teams signed up, 1200 people who will be going on a forty-two kilometre adventure, touching the sky above the Monte Rosa massif.
"The conditions of the glacier this year will favour experienced mountaineers: both on Castor and the Naso del Lyskamm there is a lot of ice, also the new section of the Colle della Fronte, to climb up onto the crest of the Naso, is very steep and will require crampons and fixed ropes" says Adriano Favre, the technical director of the competition.
He stresses the importance of security: "This will be a tough Mezzalama. The route is in perfect condition, and the hot weather we have been having has not affected the glacier, but the climbs at the Castore and the new variant of the Naso del Lyskamm will require crampons. The walls are completely covered with ice. All the teams must show that they are made up of true mountain-climbers: on April 30 it will not just be a matter of athletics; ability to get around in the mountain environment will make all the difference. I’m asking the teams to arrive prepared, to make sure they don’t experience technical problems with grip and with moving forward in roped groups with crampons on their feet”.
